In Mark 4, Jesus and His disciples are crossing the Sea of Galilee when a massive storm arises. It’s so big and so furious that these veteran fishermen are scared for their lives. They wake up Jesus, exhausted from a long day of hard work, and beg him to help. He takes a look at the storm and tells it to stop. Instantly, the wind and waves obey and the weather calms. When they see this, the disciples look at each other and ask, trembling with fear, “Who is this man?” Many of us have a small picture of Jesus. Like the disciples, we need our eyes opened to see just how incredible and powerful He is.

Romans 15:18-19 – “For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience — by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God — so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ.” Want to preach the Gospel in a way that sees results? Do what Paul did. Preach “by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God.” Allow the Holy Spirit to move in you and through you, and you will be amazed at what He will do.

We were in downtown Romania sharing the Gospel when we saw an older woman selling doilies. The three of us all felt God leading us to talk with her, but as we shared about Jesus, she was hesitant, even combative. Rather than argue, we thanked her for her time and asked if we could pray for her before leaving. “Yes, please!” she said, showing us her arm, which was stuck at a 90-degree angle and in constant pain. We laid hands on her arm and prayed that God would do a miracle. Suddenly, right there in the middle of the busy city streets, she was totally and completely healed, all the pain leaving and full mobility returning to her arm. In Acts 1:8, Jesus promised, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…” We are called not just to share good information about Jesus but to walk in His power and see the sick healed and oppressed delivered.

Luke 9:1-2 – “And Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.” Though we have an Enemy who is out to steal, kill, and destroy, we have nothing to fear because Jesus has given us power and authority over him. The same authority Jesus demonstrated in confronting demonic powers and delivering the tormented, we have.

“What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” – Luke 4:36. Our Enemy, Satan, is strong, he’s deceptive, he’s manipulative. He knows us better than we know ourselves… What hope do we have against so savage a foe? Jesus. In His life, He demonstrated complete and total authority over the power of the Enemy. Even the fiercest of demonic infestations were made to bow in submission before Him.

In 2 Corinthians 4:4, it says that “the god of this world” has blinded people’s minds from the truth. How does Satan operate as “the god of this world”? Is he really a god? How much power does he have? Where does he get his authority? And, most importantly, how can we walk free from his influence?

Matthew Henry wrote in his famous commentary, “The devil, though he is an enemy to all saints, is a conquered enemy. The Captain of our salvation has defeated and disarmed him; we have nothing to do but to pursue the victory.” We are engaged in a great spiritual war concerning our souls, and though our enemy is terrifying in his skill to manipulate and deceive, we have nothing to fear. It’s time to wake up, get to the fight, and receive the victory Jesus won for us on the cross.

On November 7, 1791, .America experienced what some historians call its most decisive military defeat ever. American troops went into battle with superior numbers and better arms – victory seemed guaranteed – which made the ensuing defeat all the more catastrophic. What happened? Major Denny, one of the few survivors, pointed out the problem: “a [lack of] knowledge of the collected force and situations of the enemy; of this we were perfectly ignorant.” We are engaged in a spiritual war for our souls. If we ant to win, we can’t afford to remain ignorant of the Enemy and his tactics.

Rather than being simply another meeting to go to, the church as God envisioned it is the hope of the world. We are called as the temple of God, where the Holy Spirit of God Himself dwells. We are the body of Christ, a mystical, miraculous union of God and mankind, carrying the authority of God because we are united with God. We are the pillar and foundation of truth, a kingdom of priests, making the wisdom of God known to the world.
