In the Welsh Revival of 1901, over 1 million people were added to the Kingdom of God. Whole cities were transformed. Churches were packed. Bars closed. Crime vanished. Police had nothing to do so they traveled the country in Gospel quartets. And the most amazing thing of all is that this transformation came in large part from unknown and unnamed men and women of God who simply preached the Gospel however they could, people like the illiterate farmer’s wife who led 70 neighbors to Jesus. Today, we wrap up the “Preaching the Gospel” portion of the Cornerstone Vision with “Tools, Tips, and Tracts.”

Romans 15:18-19 – “For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience — by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God — so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ.” Want to preach the Gospel in a way that sees results? Do what Paul did. Preach “by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God.” Allow the Holy Spirit to move in you and through you, and you will be amazed at what He will do.

We were in downtown Romania sharing the Gospel when we saw an older woman selling doilies. The three of us all felt God leading us to talk with her, but as we shared about Jesus, she was hesitant, even combative. Rather than argue, we thanked her for her time and asked if we could pray for her before leaving. “Yes, please!” she said, showing us her arm, which was stuck at a 90-degree angle and in constant pain. We laid hands on her arm and prayed that God would do a miracle. Suddenly, right there in the middle of the busy city streets, she was totally and completely healed, all the pain leaving and full mobility returning to her arm. In Acts 1:8, Jesus promised, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…” We are called not just to share good information about Jesus but to walk in His power and see the sick healed and oppressed delivered.

Would you take medicine if you didn’t know you were sick? Would you leave a burning building if you didn’t know it was on fire? When you live in Wisconsin, you grow to like cheese. It’s just part of our DNA up here in the frozen tundra. Probably literally a part of our DNA at this point. After a few years as a missionary in Romania, we were hankering for some good cheddar cheese. We visited international stores, talked to expats, and kept our eyes constantly open, always on the hunt for the elusive dairy product that would satisfy our wildest dreams. When we finally tracked some down, we told everyone we knew where to get it. Why? Because finding good cheddar in Eastern Europe is good news. The Greek word translated “Gospel” literally means “good news.” What is this good news? How can we share it? Watch the video…

What would you do if you lived under a tyrannical government with corrupt leaders who demanded your absolute obedience? Leaders who emptied the treasury for their own perverse pursuits, leaders of such moral depravity and brutal violence that it would shock even the most hardened heart? What would you do if the people around you were indifferent to suffering, if right and wrong didn’t mean anything anymore, if the whole world seemed to have gone mad all at once? That’s the world into which Jesus launched His church with a simple command – preach the Gospel. If the Gospel was the answer in the first century, the Gospel is still the answer today. Church, we need to get serious about proclaiming what Jesus has done.

Preaching the Gospel, making disciples, raising up leaders, and establishing churches until the whole earth is filled with the glory of the Lord. That just so happens to be our vision statement at Cornerstone, but it’s more than that. It’s what Jesus commissioned His people to do to spread His kingdom on the earth. It’s about seeing lives changed.
