YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST 5 - MORE THAN CONQUERORS

JAKE STIMPSON | IDENTITY | WHO ARE YOU | IN CHRIST | VICTORY | MORE THAN CONQUERORS | ROMANS 8

After years of persecution, struggle, and suffering, the Apostle Paul once wrote, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” What did he mean that we are “more than conquerors”? How could someone who suffered so much see himself as completely victorious?

In the late 1890s in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, a wealthy lawyer passed away. His widow, Alice, unable to provide financially for herself, sold their luxury items, dismissed their servants, and locked herself away in their home. She survived for the next 20 years on handouts and charity from kind neighbors. After she passed away, the decaying mansion was opened. To everyone’s surprise, over $4.8 million in cash was found hidden inside. Alice had held onto more than enough money to live in luxury, yet for the past 2 decades, she had lived like a pauper. JAKE STIMPSON | IDENTITY | WHO ARE YOU | IN CHRIST | NEW CREATION | 2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 | YOU CAN CHANGE

Blaise Pascal stated, “Not only do we know God through Jesus Christ, but we only know ourselves through Jesus Christ. We only know life and death through Jesus Christ. Apart from Jesus, we cannot know the meaning of our life, the meaning of our death, the meaning of God, or the meaning of ourselves. It is only in Christ.” When you come to Jesus, you find your identity in Him. Who is this new person in Christ? What does that new identity entail? Way more than most of us realize…

Sociologists say your identity is made up of two basic components: your concept of who you are and your sense of worth. In the West, we tend to build our identity around the pursuit of our dreams, our work, our relationships, our talents, and our accomplishments. The end result in general is confusion, discouragement, stress, and anxiety, because our worth is determined by our performance. To this feeling of weight and pressure, Jesus offers a solution – your identity was never meant to be found in what you do or what you accomplish but in Him.
