Sociologists say your identity is made up of two basic components: your concept of who you are and your sense of worth. In the West, we tend to build our identity around the pursuit of our dreams, our work, our relationships, our talents, and our accomplishments. The end result in general is confusion, discouragement, stress, and anxiety, because our worth is determined by our performance. To this feeling of weight and pressure, Jesus offers a solution – your identity was never meant to be found in what you do or what you accomplish but in Him.

If you’ve ever felt like God was distant and uncaring, you need to listen to this message. When you’re His child, He supports you, He cares for you, He shows you endless mercy, He thinks about you all the time… And you get the honor of learning to live like Him who said, “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.” (Isaiah 49:15)

What’s the problem with our world? Are things really as screwed up as they seem? Well, yes. Without God, we are fundamentally messed up on the inside, and no matter how much good we try to do, it is never enough. We need more than just new rules or new behaviors or new strategies. Something needs to change on the inside, or, as Jesus put it, we must be born again.

In Matthew 23, Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for their hard hearts, religious legalism, and downright cruelty. It’s probably his most scathing sermon recorded in the Gospels. At one point, he calls them blind guides who strain out gnats from their meals while swallowing camels. They’ve been so obsessed by all sorts of little things that they’ve missed the important stuff, like justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Faithfulness is not just one more thing to add to your To Do list. It’s at the basis of everything in the Kingdom of God.

In the Gospels, we find the story of two sisters, Mary and Martha. Jesus comes to their home, and Mary is so in awe that she breaks cultural norms to sit at the feet of Jesus and hear Him teach. Martha, busy getting things ready for Jesus, is distracted and annoyed at her sister. It’s easy to sympathize with Martha, who was just trying to get things done, but in her busyness, she missed out on the greatest gift of all, the fact that Jesus Himself was in her home. In the midst of endless opportunities to be distracted, we’ve got to guard our hearts or we too will miss the one thing that really matters, knowing Jesus.
