“And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” – John 17:3. Jesus said that eternal life was knowing God… What does it mean to know God? Is it just a matter of knowing facts and information about Him? Or is it something deeper?

Who was Jesus toughest on while on the earth? Who did he really wail on? The Pharisees! One of the dangers of the Pharisees is that they were so close to being right, and yet so completely wrong. They were admirable in their devotion to the Law, their seriousness toward God, their dedication to righteousness… but they didn’t actually have a relationship with God and that’s why they were so wrong in everything. If we’re not careful, we can be the same, parading around with an air of religiosity but with no real relationship with the living God.

When Moses was up on the mountain meeting with the Eternal Living God Himself, the people down below were… worshiping a statue of a cow? Yep. They told God they didn’t want a relationship with Him and instead would give their time and energy to… a cow. As easy as it is to pick on the Israelites for their less-than-classy choice, we often do the same. God has called us to a dynamic, living relationship with Him, yet so often we get sucked into things that don’t really matter. Time to get back to devoting ourselves to knowing God.
