A number of times in the New Testament, Jesus gave the disciples a remarkable promise that whatever they ask, He would do for them, even if they asked Him to move a mountain. Was He serious? Did He really mean that?

Jesus told His disciples that He no longer called them slaves but friends. Despite what we tend to think, being a good slave and being a good friend are very similar in outward actions. But what are the crucial differences? Friends know the master’s heart, with friends there is a mutual surrender, and friends are motivated to serve out of love, not obligation.

One of the most difficult things Jesus ever said is in Matthew 20:27-28 – “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” What did He mean? Is He serious that we have to lay our lives down for each other as servants, even slaves?

Jesus came to save you out of one kingdom and into another, out of slavery to sin and death and into service to the King of Kings. He’s the Savior, but He’s also the Lord. Have you surrendered to His Lordship, or are you hoping for His saving without surrendering to His expectations on your life?

JI Packer once wrote, “What is a Christian? The richest answer I know is that a Christian is one who has God as a father… Our understanding of Christianity cannot be better than our grasp of adoption.” If you’ve given your life to Jesus, the Bible says you have been adopted by God. You’re not a slave, you’re not just a servant, you’re not just a religious devotee or a follower of creeds and philosophies – you’re a son or daughter of God.
