A local pastor said of the 1904 Welsh Revival, “I have no more doubt of its being a work of God than I have of my own existence. As to describing the revival and estimating its results, can you put in words those deep and hallowed experiences of life realized when God meets you almost palpably and sways your whole being cross-ward, heavenward, and the atmosphere trembles with light, life, love, joy, praise, reverence, [and] awe?” Is God stirring up a new revival among us? Maybe, maybe not. But one thing I know for certain is that His heart has always been to restore and revive.

A. W. Tozer once said, “True revival changes the moral climate of a community.” What’s been happening at Asbury and other campuses across America? Is God stirring up a new national revival? What happened in Europe after Saint Patrick brought the Gospel to Ireland is one of the most fascinating stories in all of history. The Roman Empire had collapsed. Barbarian tribes had demolished cities, burned crops, destroyed libraries, and chased away the military, government officials, philosophers, teachers, and priests. European civilization was on the brink of collapse. But along came the Irish monks, preaching the Good News and a love of learning. “Monks began to set off in every direction, bent on glorious and heroic exile for the sake of Christ. They were warrior-monks, of course, and certainly not afraid of whatever monsters they might meet.” It is because of the hard work of these Irish monks – some of them a bit crazy – that European civilization survived and Christianity spread to countless unreached Barbarian tribes.

He baptized over 120,000 people and planted 300 churches in a dark, violent foreign culture. He confronted paganism, superstition, witchcraft, and idolatry. He faced down cruel barbarian warlords and rebuked fierce slave traders. Because of him, an island nation found peace, prosperity and purpose. Who was this man? None other than Saint Patrick, a courageous and bold ambassador for Christ.

But unfortunately there had been a little mistake: The thing at the bottom was not a bed of roses after all; it was a cesspool full of barbed wire.” George Orwell wrote these words in 1940, but they fit equally well today, a time when life seems to be running from one crisis after another. What on earth is going on? How are we supposed to respond? What is the church’s role in all of this?
