Where did we get our modern worldview from? Why do we see things the way we do? Why do we think humility is something good? Why is hypocrisy so despised? Why do we think there is honor in loving and forgiving those who hurt you? It’s all because of Jesus’ radical influence on our modern world.

Why do we believe what we believe? Where has our modern worldview come from? Believe it or not, much of what we take for granted in how we view the world has come straight from Jesus. Why do we feel compelled to care for the sick? Why do we assume all people have inherent rights? Why do we view men and women as equals? Because of the things that Jesus said and did.

What happened in Europe after Saint Patrick brought the Gospel to Ireland is one of the most fascinating stories in all of history. The Roman Empire had collapsed. Barbarian tribes had demolished cities, burned crops, destroyed libraries, and chased away the military, government officials, philosophers, teachers, and priests. European civilization was on the brink of collapse. But along came the Irish monks, preaching the Good News and a love of learning. “Monks began to set off in every direction, bent on glorious and heroic exile for the sake of Christ. They were warrior-monks, of course, and certainly not afraid of whatever monsters they might meet.” It is because of the hard work of these Irish monks – some of them a bit crazy – that European civilization survived and Christianity spread to countless unreached Barbarian tribes.

What would you do if you lived under a tyrannical government with corrupt leaders who demanded your absolute obedience? Leaders who emptied the treasury for their own perverse pursuits, leaders of such moral depravity and brutal violence that it would shock even the most hardened heart? What would you do if the people around you were indifferent to suffering, if right and wrong didn’t mean anything anymore, if the whole world seemed to have gone mad all at once? That’s the world into which Jesus launched His church with a simple command – preach the Gospel. If the Gospel was the answer in the first century, the Gospel is still the answer today. Church, we need to get serious about proclaiming what Jesus has done.
