PRINCIPLES OF SPIRITUAL WARFARE 4 - SATAN: THE ENEMY, ADVERSARY, ACCUSER, DEVIL, THIEF

Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu wrote in The Art of War, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” Too many of us today aren’t aware of the full victory that is ours through Jesus’ death on the cross, and we’re even more clueless about this enemy of ours, referred to in the Bible as Satan, the Enemy, the Adversary, the Accuser, the Devil, the Thief, and many more.

In the middle of the Korean War, two opposing views arose regarding victory. General Douglas MacArthur urged the US dramatically increase the war effort by invading Communist China. General Omar Bradley, whose opinion was held by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned instead that the real enemy was not China but the Soviet Union. In a famous Senate hearing, Bradley denounced MacArthur’s strategy, declaring, “Frankly, in the opinion of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, this strategy would involve us in the wrong war, at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and with the wrong enemy.” As we continue this series on spiritual warfare, it’s vital to make sure we’re fighting the right war, in the right place, at the right time, with the right enemy. Let’s look at 4 questions to ask before going to war.

Matthew Henry wrote in his famous commentary, “The devil, though he is an enemy to all saints, is a conquered enemy. The Captain of our salvation has defeated and disarmed him; we have nothing to do but to pursue the victory.” We are engaged in a great spiritual war concerning our souls, and though our enemy is terrifying in his skill to manipulate and deceive, we have nothing to fear. It’s time to wake up, get to the fight, and receive the victory Jesus won for us on the cross.

On November 7, 1791, .America experienced what some historians call its most decisive military defeat ever. American troops went into battle with superior numbers and better arms – victory seemed guaranteed – which made the ensuing defeat all the more catastrophic. What happened? Major Denny, one of the few survivors, pointed out the problem: “a [lack of] knowledge of the collected force and situations of the enemy; of this we were perfectly ignorant.” We are engaged in a spiritual war for our souls. If we ant to win, we can’t afford to remain ignorant of the Enemy and his tactics.

It’s about more than just coming and watching a performance, more even than just serving and getting involved – it’s about living a life connected with others, where we each lay our own desires down for others. And as we live this way, the world will see and be drawn to Jesus.

JAKE STIMPSON | CHURCH | NEW TESTAMENT | SALT | LIGHT | MATTHEW 5:13 | MATTHEW 5:14-16
While our culture has become increasingly antagonistic toward the church, the church in many ways has retreated from our high calling to be salt and light. Rather than bringing restoration, hope, and light into dark places, we’ve surrendered to the critics, stood back in timidity, and complained about the problems instead of fixing them. It’s time we as the church stop holding back in fear and selfishness. It’s time to step into our calling and bring healing and hope to a world in despair.
