Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24) One of the most challenging and humbling aspects of Christianity is this demand to, on the one hand, be ready to face persecution with a smile and, on the other hand, to obey Jesus in all things. The early church understood this profoundly. What about us?
